HKU Summer Research Programme—An Inspiring Journey and Beyond

The HKU Summer Research Programme (SRP) is a 10-week intense research training programme with networking and extra-curricular activities for elite students from around the world who are interested in pursuing research postgraduate studies in a wide range of disciplines at HKU. The programme provides students with a unique opportunity to work under the mentorship of eminent professors at HKU, and to experience the challenges and benefits of carrying out an independent research project.

In this issue, three enthusiastic young people will share their unforgettable experience in participating in the HKU SRP 2023 as well as undertaking research projects at the HKU Musketeers Foundation Institute of Data Science (IDS)—an inspiring journey of collaboration, growth, and friendship.

Bryan Choy from the University of California, Los Angeles

“The SRP is a congregation of a diverse intellectual community and a fellowship fostered to support our keen interests in research.”

Bryan expressed his appreciation for the guidance provided by his mentor, Dr Alec Kirkley, as he delved into the complexities of data science in urban research. “The steadfast luminance of Dr Kirkley’s guidance helped me navigate the intricacy of data science’s applications in the once-foreign realm of urban research,” he shared. “Dr Kirkley’s sagacious mentorship not only enriched my understanding but also honed my aptitude as a diligent and discerning researcher.”

Apart from conducting research, Bryan was also given the opportunity to engage in various outreach programmes and served as the master of ceremonies at the institute’s inaugural Summer Institute.  He appreciated the overwhelming trust and support from the IDS, and his excellent performance was rewarded with the SRP’s Outstanding Achievement Award and a conditional offer for the HKU Presidential PhD Scholarship.

“The SRP at the University’s IDS has given me so much in such a short time. It gave me lifelong friends, the confidence to pursue a future in research, and a summer I will never forget.”

Pei Zhou from the University of California, San Diego

“This SRP at IDS encourages us not only to become skilled professionals but also to become thoughtful innovators.”

Pei valued the interdisciplinary exchange at IDS, and the strong friendships that were formed during the SRP 2023.  Under the mentorship of Dr Yanchao Yang, Pei eagerly explored the most cutting-edge theories and applications in the field of data science.  He found the theories and applications incredibly interesting and was enlightened by his peers from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

Beyond academic research, the SRP has also provided Pei with opportunities for personal growth through attending transferable skill retreats and seminars. He also won the Best Poster Presenter Award with his research project titled ‘Levering Foundation Models for Embodied Artificial Intelligence’.

“This research programme at IDS has taught me the significance of collaboration on the academic journey,” Pei shared. “IDS provided us with a platform for interdisciplinary exchange that not only sharpened our technical abilities but also encouraged us to question, challenge, and redefine the boundaries of what we thought was possible… I strongly recommend this programme to anyone eager to explore the world of data science.”

Henry Wang from the University of Oxford

Embrace the chance to become a part of the IDS family – a decision that promises not only academic advancement but also the forging of lasting connections and unforgettable experiences.

Henry found his time on the SRP 2023 to be exceptional due to the enriching academic environment at HKU and the empowering guidance of his mentor Dr Xihui Liu, whose guidance led him to a comprehensive understanding of the diffusion model’s principles and applications.

Henry was also thankful to Ms Maggie Chan, Assistant Director (Administration), IDS, who organised various recreational activities and culinary explorations, all of which helped form cherished memories.

“To aspiring students considering IDS programmes, I implore you to seize the opportunity with confidence,” Henry said.  “Within this institute, you will encounter rigorous professors who ignite intellectual growth, like-minded peers who share your passion, a contemporary and comfortable workspace that fuels productivity, and an atmosphere brimming with warmth and support.”
