A team of Landscape Architecture PhD students from HKU were selected as finalists for the 2025 Asian Climate-SDG Technology Innovation Hackathon, an international competition co-organised by Tsinghua University, HKU, and the National University of Singapore, with support from organisations including the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and World Health Organization (WHO). The hackathon aims to inspire innovative research among young scholars in climate change and health fields, and provide wisdom and solutions from young people for global sustainable development.
Their proposal, ‘Climate-Health Route Navigator’, aims to provide safe and healthy travel guidance for the public against the backdrop of climate change and extreme weather events. As finalists at the Hackathon, they were part of a roadshow in Hong Kong and will also take part in the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30)—a global stage on which the world comes together to address the climate crisis—where they will showcase their innovative solutions to industry pioneers and experts.
“Safeguarding human health in a changing climate demands more than incremental change – it requires transformative thinking and cross-sector collaboration,” notes Professor Gong Peng, HKU’s Vice-President (Academic Development) in the event’s welcoming remarks. “This innovation challenge empowers the next generation to reimagine solutions at the intersection of climate and health. At the University of Hong Kong, we are committed to supporting these pioneers to turn their bold ideas into action.”
Congratulations to the team on their remarkable achievements!
