Xubin Ren and Jiabin Tang—both PhD candidates in the Musketeers Foundation Institute of Data Science (IDS) under the supervision of Professor Chao Huang—participated in the KDD 2024: 30th ACM SIGKDD Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining held in Barcelona, Spain, this summer.
SIGKDD’s mission is to provide the premier forum for the advancement, education, and adoption of the science of knowledge discovery and data mining from all types of data stored in computers and networks of computers. As the first authors of their respective accepted papers, Xubin and Jiabin not only delivered their paper presentations but also led individual tutorials on their research in front of the conference audience.
Below, Xubin and Jiabin share the insights they gained from this international conference and the enriching experiences they encountered in the enchanting city of Barcelona.
Xubin Ren In Barcelona, the stunning landscapes and seafood delights captivated me. The mix of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and modern architecture enthralled me as we explored the city. Paper presented at KDD 2024: HiGPT: Heterogeneous Graph Language Model One of the highlights of the KDD 2024 conference trip was that I had to deliver three talks. I had the chance to organise and present at a tutorial, followed by a paper presentation where I shared the latest findings from my research. Additionally, I was invited to give a talk at a workshop, allowing me to engage with experts in a more focused domain of data mining. These experiences honed my presentation skills and I was given the chance to receive valuable feedback on my work, which I believe will be instrumental in refining my research approach moving forward. As a recipient of the Student Travel Award, I had the privilege of serving as a volunteer during the event, which offered a valuable behind-the-scenes look for me at how large-scale conferences are organised. These hands-on experiences broadened my understanding of academic networking and event logistics, and I trust that such skills will certainly be beneficial to me as a potential future leader in academia in terms of organising workshops or sessions for conferences. In addition to the academic aspects, Xubin and I both made use of this great opportunity to explore the vibrant city of Barcelona. We visited several iconic landmarks, including the breathtaking Sagrada Família and the panoramic views from Mount Tibidabo. These cultural experiences added a memorable dimension to the trip, further enriching the overall experience. The combination of presenting, networking, and gaining new perspectives on data science research has inspired me to explore interdisciplinary approaches in my own work at IDS. Attending KDD 2024 has not only expanded my academic network but also solidified my long-term research goals by exposing me to cutting-edge methodologies and collaborative possibilities.
