A Message to Our PhD Students—What is a PhD?

Cover story

First, as a bit of self-disclosure, I completed my PhD training in Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand. I was fortunate to advance to my final months preparing for my oral defence, despite my supervisor being caught up in a major legal proceeding. That was over 20 years ago!

As you embark on your journey to pursue a PhD, it’s essential to remember that this process extends beyond research lab work. Your academic journey also involves caring for your mental health and supporting the well-being of others within our community. I like to play with letters, so I redefine PhD as ‘Promoting Health Development’.

PhD meaning 1

Health development is never static; it is a continuous process of learning and unlearning. It involves finding a path that aligns with your personality and lifestyle, allowing you to cultivate and foster your health. Health encompasses many facets, including emotional, psychological, financial, social, and physical well-being. Each aspect plays a crucial role in your overall health and can significantly impact your ability to succeed in your studies. As you navigate this challenging yet rewarding journey, it’s vital to prioritize your mental health. Balancing the demands of your research, coursework, and personal life can be overwhelming, so taking the time to practice self-care is essential. Remember, it’s perfectly okay to seek help when needed, whether from a counsellor, mentor, or fellow student.

PhD meaning 2

One of the most effective ways to maintain a strong mental health community among PhD students is through peer support, so another play with letters is ‘PhD—P for Peers, H for Help, D for Diversity’. Building connections with your fellow students can create a supportive environment where everyone feels valued and understood. Sharing experiences, challenges, and successes fosters a sense of belonging and can make a significant difference in your mental well-being.

It’s important to acknowledge that our peers come from diverse backgrounds. Each of you brings unique perspectives shaped by your language, career aspirations, academic skills, and life experiences. Embracing this diversity is crucial for creating an inclusive community. Let’s learn to respect and reach out to those who may be different from us. Engaging with diverse individuals can enrich your PhD experience, offering new insights and collaborative opportunities.

As you continue on your PhD journey, I encourage you to foster connections with your peers. Attend workshops, participate in group discussions, and engage in social activities. These interactions can help you build relationships that are not only academically beneficial but also personally rewarding.

In closing, I wish you all good health and a fulfilling PhD journey. Remember that your well-being is just as important as your research. Stay connected, support one another, and embrace the diverse community that surrounds you. Together, we can create an environment that promotes health development for all.
