Student Corner: Vinci Cheung—Embracing the Incredible Opportunities and Support at HKU
Vinci is a passionate postgraduate research student who works at the intersections of urban, social, and critical geography. As part of her doctoral studies, she is investigating the implications of smart urbanism initiatives and emerging technologies on society and geography, under the supervision of Professor George C S Lin.
“HKU is an amazing place to do research,” Vinci said. “The University provides abundant learning opportunities and funding support, and I feel incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by so many intelligent, kind, and supportive people of very diverse backgrounds.”
In her first year of PhD studies, Vinci co-organised a paper session at the 2024 American Association of Geographers (AAG) Annual Meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii. The session brought together scholars from around the globe to discuss the multifaceted challenges and opportunities cities encounter in the ever-evolving urban landscape. She shared, “It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with other researchers who share similar interests in urban geography! Questioning the conventional and technocratic approaches to urban development, we hope to generate insights that can inform more equitable and inclusive smart city planning and policy.”
Beyond her research, Vinci is also an enthusiastic HKU Postgraduate Student Ambassador. Throughout the year, she has actively participated in various events with diverse roles, such as serving as the MC for the opening and closing ceremonies of the HKU Summer Research Programme 2024 and delivering student-sharing sessions on multiple occasions. These experiences have further enriched her PhD journey at HKU.
Reflecting on her first-year PhD journey at HKU, Vinci is deeply appreciative of the support and encouragement she has received from her supervisors and professors. “Their mentorship and guidance have been transformative and invaluable in helping me navigate the challenges of doctoral research,” she said.
When asked about her message for prospective applicants, she encourages them to take the initiative and explore the incredible opportunities available at HKU. “The University provides a wealth of academic and extracurricular experiences that can truly transform your graduate journey."
