Turn On Your Scam Radar! Stay Vigilant and Avoid Scams
From renting apartments to ordering takeaway, and even to online dating, scams can come in all shapes and sizes, and they are not slowing down anytime soon. The Hong Kong Police Force (HKPF) recorded 2,574 reports of phone scams in the first five months of 2025, marking an almost 20 percent jump from last year.
As the new academic year begins, students from all around the world gather at HKU to start their new chapter on our diverse, international campus. Unfortunately, students are most vulnerable in falling for such scams, especially those who have just moved to a new environment. According to the HKPF, the first or second week of the school year is when most scams occur. To protect yourself from falling victim, it is important that you stay vigilant and learn how to recognise and avoid scams.
How to Identify Scams
Scams come in many different disguises. The more common types of scams include phishing scams, impersonation scams (pretending to be a bank, tech support, or government officials), romance scams, investment fraud, and employment scams. How to Avoid Scams
Always remain vigilant, learn to identify fraudulent websites and messages, avoid sharing personal information, and cut off communication if you suspect you are being targeted.

Where to Seek Help
If you believe you have been targeted by a scam, call the Anti-Scam Helpline 18222 for immediate consultation. If you suspect that you have fallen prey to a scam, report the case at the nearest police station. For emergencies, dial 999.

Anti-Scam Campaigns for HKUers
HKU has been enhancing its initiatives in educating its community and safeguarding students from scams. To promote safety, all new students must complete the Anti-Scam Quiz within two weeks of the start of the semester.
