HKU Summer Research Programme 2025: A Summer of Research, Discovery, and Connection

SPR 2025

The HKU Summer Research Programme 2025 concluded on August 9, marking another milestone in promoting academic excellence and fostering global connections. A total of 82 talented minds from around the world were selected to participate in this transformative journey, filled with intellectual stimulation, cultural exchange, and unforgettable memories. As we reflect on the programme’s success, here are some highlights from this summer:

Expanding Academic Horizons: 20+ Seminars and Workshops

The programme featured over 20 seminars and workshops, covering cutting-edge domains from artificial intelligence and innovation to social inequality. Participants engaged in immersive knowledge exchange, gaining both expertise and inspiration to drive their research ambitions forward.

Building Bonds Beyond the Classroom: Social and Networking Events

Beyond academia, the programme prioritised connection. From the Fun Day and lunch party to the farewell lunch, participants forged friendships across borders. A highlight was the High Table Dinner on July 16, where students gathered at the iconic Loke Yew Hall to experience one of the HKU’s signature events, featuring inspiring speeches, lively discussions, and memorable connections.

Celebrating Diversity: Connecting Great Minds from Around the World

The programme embraces diversity and inclusion. This year, we recruited bright minds from 13 countries and territories—from Austria to Indonesia, Mexico to South Korea—transforming the programme into a vibrant hub for cross-cultural dialogue and collaborative innovation.

Recognising Excellence: 30 Outstanding Completion Awards

After the 10-week intensive training, 30 participants were selected to receive the Outstanding Completion Award, recognising those who demonstrated outstanding performance throughout the programme. Awardees will receive a conditional offer for the HKU Presidential PhD Scholarship to pursue full-time PhD studies at HKU, where their research potential can be fully realised.

A Fond Farewell, and New Beginnings

As Professor David Li, Chairman of the Summer Research Programme 2025 Working Group and Associate Dan of the Graduate School, remarked at the completion ceremony: “This summer wasn’t just about research and projects. It was also about building lasting connections and be inspired by different cultures.”

As we bid farewell to a summer of inspired minds and lasting friendships, we look forward to welcoming our participants back to HKU as full-time research postgraduate students, ready to take their research experiences to the next level.
