Congratulations to Dr Jixiang Jing, a PhD graduate from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, who has been honoured with the 2025 Young Scientist Award in engineering science by the Hong Kong Institution of Science (HKIS). He completed his doctoral studies at HKU in 2024 under the supervision of Professor Zhiqin Chu.
Dr Jing’s award-winning project, titled “Scalable Production of Ultraflat and Ultraflexible Diamond Membrane,”, marks a significant breakthrough in materials science and engineering. In his research, Dr Jing developed a revolutionary fabrication technique for diamond membranes that overcomes longstanding limitations associated with traditional methods. Conventional technologies, which have been used over the past three decades, are often expensive, slow, and limited in size, making large-scale production challenging.
In contrast, Dr Jing’s innovative process enables the production of inch-scale diamond wafers in less than ten seconds. This remarkable speed and efficiency open new possibilities for practical applications, including flexible electronics, high-performance sensors, and advanced medical devices. The ability to produce ultraflat and ultraflexible diamond membranes at scale could revolutionise industries reliant on cutting-edge materials. This recognition from the HKIS underscores Dr Jing’s outstanding contribution to engineering science and highlights the potential impact of his work on future technological advancements.
The HKIS’s Young Scientist Award aims to recognise young scientists and engineers in Hong Kong who demonstrate outstanding research excellence and strong potential to advance science and technology. Finalists are shortlisted through a rigorous review process conducted by expert selection panels, and the awards are presented annually at the HKIS Annual Conference, with finalists shortlisted through a rigorous review process conducted by expert selection panels.
