Congratulations to Yilun Li, PhD student in the Department of Architecture under the supervision of Dr. Chao Ren, for winning the Merit Entry in the Design Competition for the Transformation of the Sensory Garden at Kwun Tong Promenade (Student Group). The competition was jointly organised by the Hong Kong Institute of Architects and the Energizing Kowloon East Office of the Development Bureau.

Yilun’s project features a design concept of “Senses Hills and Valleys: Urbanized Natural Experience Scheme”. The concept plan extracts three elements in nature that are closely related to human perception – namely ‘cloud’, ‘wind’ and ‘mist’ – and exhibits experiencing nature in a highly urbanised costal context through the means of abstraction and space creation. The human sensory experience is integrated with different landscape elements, forming a dynamic space for the young generation to explore. For instance, the ‘Hill of Cloud’ section features a combination of characteristic conical terrain and floating cloud elements suspended in the air; the ‘Valley of Mist’ section combines water features and suspension bridges with mist spray devices to create a touch and smell experience immersed in the mist; and the section ‘Hill of Wind’ transforms the senses of the wind into visible elements through an air-moving device suspended in the air.
