Student Corner: Qihao Wu Shares Insights from His Inspiring Research Visit to Paris

Wu Qihao

Qihao Wu, a PhD student supervised by Professor Yong-Hong Kuo in the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering, has recently returned from a research visit to Paris.

Below, Qihao shares his unique insights gained through the international collaboration and knowledge exchange in a vibrant and intellectual community at CentraleSupélec and his subsequent conference trip to Denmark.

As a PhD student at HKU, my recent research visit to Paris was an exceptional experience that significantly enriched my academic journey. Hosted by CentraleSupélec – one of the most prestigious and selective institutions in France and a key founding member of the Paris-Saclay University (World Ranking of 1st in Mathematics by ShanghaiRanking 2022) – I had the privilege of collaborating with Professor Abdel Lisser, a renowned expert in optimisation and operations research.

Vibrant Research Environment at CentraleSupélec

CentraleSupélec provided an inspiring and dynamic research environment. The state-of-the-art facilities and the vibrant intellectual community fostered an atmosphere of creativity and innovation. Working closely with Professor Lisser, I delved into advanced topics in optimisation under uncertainty, focusing on applications in healthcare operations management. His mentorship and the communications in the research group about approximate dynamic programming, game theory, and quantitative finance were invaluable, pushing the boundaries of my research capabilities.

Collaborations with Professor Abdel Lisser

Our HKU-CentraleSupélec collaboration yielded significant progress in developing robust optimisation models for operations management in hospitals and large-scale problems. Professor Lisser’s expertise was instrumental in refining our analytical models and exploring new theoretical perspectives. It’s my great pleasure to be supervised by Professor Yong-Hong Kuo and Professor Abdel Lisser. This research collaboration not only enhanced my research skills but also expanded my professional network within the international research community.

EURO 2024 Copenhagen Conference

In addition to my work in Paris, I attended the EURO 2024 conference in Copenhagen, a premier event in the field of operations research organised by the Association of European Operational Research Societies. Presenting my research on data-driven interpretable pricing at this conference was another highlight of my trip. The feedback from peers and the opportunity to engage with leading researchers were incredibly rewarding. Attending various sessions and workshops broadened my understanding of the latest advancements in operations research, statistical inference, and their practical applications.

Achievements and Acknowledgements

One of the most memorable achievements of our collaboration was receiving the Best Poster Award at the International Conference on Primary Care Ecosystem held in Hong Kong for our innovative approach and potential impact. I am deeply grateful to Professor Kuo and Professor Lisser for their mentorship and strong support. Their contributions and supervision are crucial to the success of our research. I also want to express my appreciation to Professor Abraham Wai for generously guiding me in healthcare domain knowledge.

In conclusion, my research visit to Paris and subsequent conference trips have been profoundly impactful. These experiences have not only advanced my research but also underscored the importance of international collaboration and knowledge exchange. I am eager to continue our research and produce fruitful outcomes. Finally, I am grateful for the support by the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering, Graduate School, HKU Foundation Postgraduate Fellowships, and PROCORE - France/Hong Kong Joint Research Scheme, Research Grants Council of Hong Kong and Consulate General of France in Hong Kong (Ref: F-HKU704/22).
