Be an HKUer! Your First Year Survival Tips

As September begins, new research postgraduate students arrive at HKU to start their academic journeys. Being away from home and adapting to new routines can be daunting, but here are some tips to help you thrive in your first year.
Leverage HKU’s Resources
HKU Libraries provide vital resources to support your thesis and research. You can book private study carrels or group discussion rooms for focused work or collaborative brainstorming. The Graduate School offers workshops and courses to aid your professional and personal development during this crucial year.
HKU has also introduced Guidelines on the Responsible Use of Generative AI in Research to promote ethical and effective use of GenAI. Check out our article or visit the Teaching and Learning website for more guidance, along with funding opportunities and research integrity resources on the Research Services website.
Prioritise Your Well-being
Explore dining options on campus through the HKU Catering website, which offers mobile pre-ordering for convenience. Regular exercise is key to reducing stress—visit the Centre of Sports and Exercise (CSE) for facilities and classes at the Flora Ho Sports Centre, Henry Fok Swimming Pool, or outdoor tracks.
For additional support, connect with supervisors, mentors, or peers, and take advantage of services provided by HKU and CEDARS. The Counselling and Person Enrichment Section (CoPE) offers free, confidential counseling to help manage stress, adjust to life in Hong Kong, and navigate academic challenges. Whether you need help managing stress, adjusting to life in Hong Kong, or navigating academic pressure, CoPE’s caring counselors are here to support you. Learn more on the CEDARS-CoPE website.
Stay Alert Against Scams
Online scams targeting students, especially non-local ones, are increasing. Familiarise yourself with safety guidelines on the CEDARS Anti-Scam Resource Hub. Report suspicious calls to the Police hotline (18222) or visit https://cyberdefender.hk/en-us/ to check unknown phone numbers. For Chinese Mainland students, follow the Xiaohongshu account “Western Police District” for advice.
