HKU Summer Research Programme 2026: A Journey of Research, Discovery and Connection
The HKU Summer Research Programme has successfully concluded, marking the end of an inspiring 10-week journey filled with academic exploration, hands-on research, cultural exchange and meaningful connections.
Throughout the programme, participants immersed themselves in a wide range of academic experiences designed to broaden their horizons and spark new ideas. With academic seminars and workshops covering diverse and extensive topics, students had the opportunity to engage with new perspectives, strengthen their research skills and gain valuable insights into the possibilities of postgraduate study at HKU.
A key highlight of the programme was the hands-on research experience. Each participant worked closely with an eminent professor through one-to-one mentorship, gaining first-hand exposure to the research process: from developing ideas and asking meaningful questions to analysing findings and presenting their work. This close mentorship not only deepened participants’ understanding of their chosen fields but also offered them a taste of life as a research postgraduate student at HKU.
Beyond research, the programme also created many memorable moments for friendship and cultural exchange. Social and networking activities, including the iconic High Table Dinner at Loke Yew Hall and the Pineapple Cake Baking Workshop, brought participants together in relaxed and engaging settings. The High Table Dinner, in particular, offered participants a signature HKU experience in an atmosphere of exchange, reflection and celebration. These experiences helped students build bonds beyond the classroom, connect with peers from different backgrounds, and become part of a vibrant international research community.
At the Completion Ceremony, outstanding participants were recognised for their remarkable performance throughout the programme. Selected awardees received a conditional offer for the HKU Presidential PhD Scholarship to pursue full-time PhD studies at HKU, opening the door to the next stage of their research journey.
In his closing remarks, Professor Max Shen, Dean of the Graduate School, encouraged participants to view research as a lifelong journey. He reminded them that success does not happen overnight, and that persistence, curiosity and passion are essential to making meaningful contributions.
As the programme comes to an end, we celebrate not only what our participants have achieved, but also the friendships formed, ideas exchanged and futures inspired. We look forward to seeing where their research journeys will take them next.
