Graduate Student Academic Writing Support

The Graduate Student Academic Writing Support aims to assist individual research postgraduate students in meeting the demand of English academic writing skills at graduate level. Each PhD and MPhil student is entitled to 4 hours of free individual consultation service during their candidature.

The service is not intended to edit or proofread students’ work, but rather to help them identify and address writing problems for improvements. Consultants from the Centre for Applied English Studies will help students improve their own capacity to plan, write, edit and revise academic papers.

Consultation Session

Students should submit a piece of writing of not more than 15 pages two calendar weeks before the consultation session. During the session, the consultant will discuss with the student on the writing and provide feedback for improvements.

Students are advised to take advantage of this service in the early stage of their studies so there will be a reasonable amount of time for improvements before graduation. To gain maximum benefit from the service, students are also recommended to complete Module 3: Thesis Writing beforehand.

Application Procedures

Interested students should submit the completed Application Form for Writing Support Service for MPhil/PhD Students (GS3) to the Graduate School.
