The Cross-Institutional Course Enrolment Scheme is a collaboration among the eight UGC-funded universities in Hong Kong (viz. CityU, CUHK, EdUHK, HKBU, HKU, HKUST, LU and PolyU) to enhance the opportunities for research postgraduate (RPg) students to enrol in courses and gain access to expertise available at sister universities.

Students should only enrol in the courses which are not available at HKU. 4-year PhD and MPhil students are allowed to take courses from sister institutions in lieu of HKU courses to fulfil up to 50% of the Faculty/School/Departmental coursework requirements. In case of course substitution, prior approval from supervisor(s) and the Departmental Research Postgraduate Committee (DRPC) is required.
Application Procedures
To enrol in courses offered by sister institutions, students should submit the completed application forms:
(a) Application Form for Cross-Institutional Course/Subject Enrolment for Research Postgraduate Students *; and
(b) Endorsement Form for Cross-Institution Course Enrolment (GS15)
to the Graduate School at least three working days before the application deadline specified by the host institution.
The Graduate School will forward the application to the coordinating office in the host institution for approval and students will be informed of the application result directly by the host institution.
* To enrol in courses offered by CityU, CUHK and HKUST, students are required to fill an online form. Please follow the instruction of the institution as specified in the respective website above.
Course Assessments
The host institution will inform the Graduate School of the assessment results, which will be recorded on the HKU transcript.
Information for RPg Students of Sister Institutions Taking HKU Courses

Students should only enrol in courses that are directly relevant to their field of study. Upon successful enrolment, students will be admitted to HKU as visiting students with fees waived. Instead of the HKU Student Registration Card, an official letter will be issued for identification purpose. To access the libraries at HKU, students may apply for the JULAC library card from their home institution.
By enrolling in HKU courses, students must comply with the HKU regulations and procedures governing research postgraduate degree courses. The examination regulations and timetables will be available on HKU website at least two weeks before the start of examinations.
Application Procedures
To enrol in courses offered by HKU, students should submit the completed Application Form for Cross-Institutional Course/Subject Enrolment for Research Postgraduate Students and obtain endorsement from the coordinating office of their home institution. For courses with pre-requisite requirements, supporting documents e.g. the relevant syllabuses and official transcript, are to be attached to the application.
The coordinating office will send the application form to the Graduate School of HKU before the specified application deadline, who will further seek approval from the course offering departments. Email notification of application result and course timetable will be sent to students individually before course commencement. Students are only allowed to drop courses within the first 2 weeks of course commencement.
Approval for course enrolment is at the discretion of HKU, subject to the availability of quota and other pertinent factors of the courses.
Course Assessments
RPg courses at HKU do not follow the credit system. Please consult your home institution in case of credit transfer.
HKU will notify the home institution of the assessment results. The decision on how the grades should be used is at the sole discretion of the home institution.
